Japanese menswear brand TAAKK is pleased to present its latest collection for the Autumn-Winter 2021 season.
In composing his latest collection, Takuya Morikawa, a longtime enthusiast of the Surrealist movement, delved into the intersection of reality and unreality, and with it, the ambiguity of where that intersection lies. Struck also by the quiet, meditative nature of Saul Leiter’s photography and the abstracted nostalgia it brings, in other words - a distant dream, this season the designer sought to bring dreams and reality and their inevitable contradictions to the forefront of his collection.
Since TAAKK’s founding, Morikawa has continued to reshape the possibilities of menswear design with a multidisciplinary approach - incorporating extensive material research and imaginative fabric treatments into his creations and collaborating with expert technicians to bring these ideas to existence.
Subverting expectations of the possible, this season a herringbone wool jacket effortlessly transitions into tuckable cotton shirting, a wool tailored jacket fades into a nylon MA-1 bomber, polyester twill dissolves into sheer organdy to expose layers underneath. TAAKK continues to push the limits of the feasible, turning unrealities into actualities, further blurring the distinction between dreams and reality.
Hazy and indefinite graphics are dotted throughout the collection, informed by the designer’s own dreams, evoking the ambiguity and fleeting beauty of the world through a lens that only dreams can produce.
In a short film produced by Nagisa Kodama for TAAKK this season, dreams take on a more concrete meaning but still lie at the border of endless possibilities. Dreams that have yet to take shape, but nonetheless give a yearning and guidance to anyone aspiring towards a goal. It is capturing that essence, that surreal moment before reality emerges that Morikawa tries to grasp. In his own words, Morikawa too, is ‘always dreaming’. Dreams never stop, they only shift and refine their form.
The TAAKK Autumn / Winter 2021 collection will debut virtually February 2021 and will be available in select stores worldwide starting July 2021.
